Baseball gets milestone 4-1 win against West Virginia behind Foley's complete game

The Central Michigan baseball program earned its 2,000 win when it started the Snowbird Classic strong with a 4-1 win against West Virginia on Friday.

Sophomore Jordan Foley continued his winning ways, improving to 3-0 this season and pitching a complete game to begin the tournament in Port Charlotte, Fla.

The right-hander recorded four strikeouts and two walks, allowing one run on seven hits in the game.

With a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth, freshman Zack Fields tacked on another run with the first home run of his career.

In the first, the Regnier brothers again worked together to put the Chippewas on the board, with freshman Logan up first in the line-up and getting on base with a single.

Sophomore Pat MacKenzie followed with a single of his own up the right side, and then advanced to second on the thrown.

That’s when the older Regnier, Nick, flied out to right field to bring his brother home giving CMU a 1-0 lead early in the game.

Another RBI immediately followed before the Mountaineers were able to get their third out when Fields went down swinging.

The game stayed quiet until the third inning when bats started heating up again, with sophomore Alec Ornelas hitting a triple to right field and scoring later when MacKenzie drove in a run.

The third was when WVU got on the board, scoring its only run on a wild pitch.

Two errors by the Mountaineers in the six allowed the Chippewas to load the bases, but CMU was unable to take advantage of the mistakes.

WVU went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the sixth, with the first two batters grounding out, followed  by a foul out.

The Chippewas did the same in the top of the seventh,  with Ornelas striking out swinging, Logan flying out to left, and MacKenzie popping up to shortstop.

The Mountaineers were never able to mount a comeback, with Foley and his defense keeping their opponents off the bases.

The Chippewas are back in action for game two of the classic at 1 p.m. on Saturday against Chicago State.

Senior Patrick Kaminska will get the start for CMU.
