CMU 2, WVU 0: Turner continues shutout streak
It's unusual to be up 2-0 and be disappointed at the half. Especially in soccer.
"You would think after you score a goal, you'd settle down," head coach Neil Stafford said. "Had it to West Virginia, I thought they had a good chunk of the play, a vast majority of the play, which was really disappointing."
"It was weird going into the halftime up 2-0 and being frustrated with how we played."
The Central Michigan women's soccer team regrouped in the second half and their composure improved, leading to a 2-0 victory against West Virginia in the first game of the Penn State Invitational.
Senior goalkeeper Stefanie Turner hasn't allowed a goal this season and that makes it hard for CMU to lose.
The Chippewas wasted little time before taking hold of the game.
Senior forward Laura Twidle scored her first goal of the season three minutes in and the Chippewas never looked back.
Turner made five saves throughout the game, but kept WVU off the board late when the Mountaineers had a curious rally with four shots in as many minutes.
"They put pressure on at the end, but I felt like we had it under control," Turner said. We had pressure on the ball and they had a few shots.
The Chippewas, who normally outshout their opponent, had the roll reversed, but it was quality over quantity for them tonight.
WVU outshot the Chippewas 19-7.
Sophomore Morgan Wilcoxon scored off a throw-in, giving CMU the two goal advantage.
Senior defender Katie Slaughter assisted on the goal by Twidle.
The Chippewas face No. 6 Penn State at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
