SGA presents top student survey requests to board of trustees committee
Central Michigan University's Student Government Association is working to expand library hours, online academic audits along with other initiatives.
SGA President Vince Cavataio, Vice President Colleen McNeely and President of the Residence Hall Assembly Kyle Norman met with the student liaison committee on Wednesday to discuss concerns and prepare for the first CMU Board of Trustees meeting of the year.
Many of Cavataio's concerns came from a survey distributed to CMU students.
He is working on getting external grants to extend the library hours.
"Students voiced their concerns that they want the library open later so they can study, and registered student organizations will have a place to meet,” Cavataio said.
He also discussed planning for the 10-year anniversary for the Charles V. Park Library and the possible conversion of SGA from a bicameral to a unicameral government system.
McNeely spoke about making more services available to students online, including academic audits.
University President George Ross said he made a verbal commitment to the online academic audit, and it would require a lot of work.
“I haven’t charged anyone to handle the task yet, but I am committed to accomplishing it," Ross said.
McNeely said she wants SGA to host community dinners to help students offset the cost of the cuts to the bridge card program, set up trips for students to go to Lansing and meet their representatives, work toward environmental sustainability and have involvement with employee unions.
“We want to work with the professor unions to create a more beneficial student relationship, one that mirrors our positive relationship with administration,” McNeely said.
Trustee Robert Wardrop II said the SGA committee meeting was the highlight of his day.
“The energy of the students is contagious and we love hearing about what the students are doing,” he said.
