Volleyball wins final match of weekend tournament against Saint Louis
A strong end to a slow start is how the Central Michigan volleyball team finished out this weekend.
After losing its first two matches against Iowa and Marquette, the Chippewas (1-2) were able to pull off one of the biggest wins in team history by beating the No. 58 RPI ranked team in the nation, Saint Louis in three straight games.
“We had some huge points where momentum just continued to add up and I wanted to make sure we didn’t get unaggressive and let them (Saint Louis) have their way with us,” said head coach Erik Olson.
Going into the third match the Billikens had beaten Marquette in their opener 3-1 and defeated Iowa earlier in the day 3-2 making them the tournament champions, while CMU lost its first match against Iowa 3-2 and was swept by Marquette earlier on the day.
The win marked Olson’s career win No. 100. Sophomore middle blocker Danielle Gotham was named to the All-Hawkeye Challenge Team with her biggest match coming against Iowa where she recorded nine blocks.
“We had a rocky start, but we finished strong so we’re happy overall,” Gotham said.
