MSU looks to stay undefeated; EMU, WMU go on road
No. 7 Michigan State at Northwestern, noon Saturday, ESPN Michigan State (7-0, 3-0 Big Ten) looks to remain undefeated as they go to Illinois to take on Northwestern. The Spartans had no problem taking down Illinois 26-6 last week. The Fighting Illini had no success against MSU’s defense in the second half, failing to score any points. Kirk Cousins lead the team with 201 yards passing for one touchdown. Northwestern (5-1, 1-1 Big Ten) suffered its first loss of the season last week when Purdue took a 20-17 lead with four minutes left to play. The game could have gone to either team as both teams played well, but it was Purdue quarterback Dan Dierking that delivered the game-winning touchdown, giving the Boilermakers their second conference win on the year.
Temple at Buffalo, noon Saturday, ESPN3.com Temple (5-2, 2-1 MAC) was on the winning end of a thriller last week against Bowling Green, winning 28-27. The Owls played well in the first three quarters, going into the fourth with a 28-14 lead. However, they were shutout by the Falcons defense in the last quarter, which almost cost them the game as Bowling Green scored twice but failed on the extra point conversion, giving Temple the win. Buffalo (2-4, 1-1) could not get anything going in its last game, losing 45-14 against Northern Illinois. Buffalo struggled with every aspect of the game, as NIU also dominated them in every offensive category. Bulls quarterback Jerry Davis scored the offenses only touchdown completing an 81 yard pass to Marcus Rivers, as the Huskies defense was too much for Buffalo to handle.
Ohio at Miami (4-3, 3-0), 1 p.m. Saturday Ohio (4-3, 3-1 MAC) beat Akron 38-10 on its way to a third consecutive win last weekend. Quarterback Boo Jackson led the offense, while accumulating a total of 171 yards with three touchdowns, The Zips defense just couldn’t find a way to stop him. The Bobcats have fallen into a winning groove after starting their season 1-3. Miami remains at the top of the MAC East after defeating Central Michigan on a 71-yard touchdown pass with 19 seconds left in its last game. Quarterback Zac Dysert played great for the Redhawks with three touchdowns and 399 yards passing. Andrew Cruse was the story of the game though, completing a 71-yard pass from Zac Dysert for a game-winning touchdown.
Kent State at Bowling Green, 3:30 p.m. Saturday After leading 21-7 at halftime, Kent State (2-4, 1-2 MAC) lost to Toledo 34-21 last weekend. The problems occurred for the Golden Flashes when the Rockets made necessary adjustments on defense and held Kent State scoreless throughout the second half. Jacquise Terry had a great day for the Golden Flashes, accounting for the team’s only three touchdowns with 92 total yards. Bowling Green (1-6, 0-3 MAC) continued to struggle, losing its fourth consecutive game. Bowling Green scored two touchdowns off a Jordan Hopgood one-yard run and four-yard pass to Calvin Wiley from Matt Schilz, making the score 28-27, leaving the Falcons with a tough decision. BG went for the two-point conversion and failed, costing them yet another win.
Western Michigan vs. Akron, 3:30 p.m. Saturday, ESPN3.com Notre Dame (2-4, 1-1 MAC) had no problem defeating Western Michigan last weekend, 44-20. The Fighting Irish got out to an early 7-0 lead and the Broncos had to play catch up the rest of the game. Alex Carder had trouble through the air, throwing two interceptions and no touchdowns. However, he did play better on the ground, scoring WMU’s only two touchdowns. Akron (0-7, 0-3 MAC) became the only team in the MAC conference without a win this season after losing to Ohio 38-10. Akron quarterback Matt Rodgers was responsible for the team’s only touchdown, a three-yard pass to Austin Balley.
Eastern Michigan at Virginia, 6 p.m. Saturday, ESPN3.com For the first time in 18 games, and the first time under head coach Ron English, Eastern Michigan won a game. The Eagles (1-6, 1-3 MAC) knocked off Ball State 41-38 in overtime in Muncie, Ind. EMU quarterback Alex Gillet had a huge day offensively for the Eagles, earning MAC Offensive Player of the Week honors, scoring five total touchdowns and combining for 414 yards. His most important touchdown came in overtime, completing a 12-yard pass to Ben Thayer. Virginia (2-5, 1-2 ACC) has had a lot of trouble finding a win as of late, losing three consecutive games with a 44-10 loss against North Carolina last week. Keith Payne scored the team’s only touchdown late in the second quarter. UNC entered the second half with a comfortable 27-10 lead, and held the Cavaliers scoreless on their way to scoring 17 more points and a convincing victory.
Ball State at Toledo, 7 p.m. Saturday Ball State (2-5, 1-2 MAC) is coming off back-to-back losses for the second time this season. After being held to a field goal during their overtime drive, the Cardinals failed to stop EMU. Keith Wenning had led his offense with a total of four touchdowns and 155 yards. Toledo (4-3, 3-0 MAC) managed to snap its two-game losing skid after a come from behind win against Kent State 34-21. The Rockets overcame a 21-7 deficit, scoring 27 points in the second half while holding the Golden Flashes scoreless. Toledo performed well when running the ball with three different players rushing for touchdowns including quarterback Austin Dantin, wide receiver Bernard Reedy and running back Adonis Thomas.
