Volleyball beats Niagara, 3-1, for first win of season


The Central Michigan women's volleyball team got its first win of the 2010 season Friday, beating Niagara 3-1 to open the Youngstown State Invitational in Youngstown, Ohio.

Senior Lauren Krupsky and junior Kaitlyn Schultz led the way for the Chippewas, recording 18 and 15 kills, respectively.

CMU won the first (26-24), third (25-17) and fourth (25-13) sets, while Niagara won the second set (25-22).

Relying on their defense, the Chippewas held the Purple Eagles to a .092 hitting percentage during the match. CMU recorded a .247 mark for the match.

Freshman Jenna Coates had a match-high 22 digs, while junior Catherine Ludwig had a season-high 51 assists and two aces.

CMU continues tournament play at 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday against Howard and host YSU.
