Wrestling team soundly beats Stanford
The CMU wrestling team got back on track by defeating Stanford 33-6 on Sunday at Rose Arena after losing two consecutive dual matches.
The win over the Cardinal gives CMU a 9-2 record in dual matches.
“We are hard to beat,” said coach Tom Borrelli. “We need to open up a little more and start scoring points in some weight classes, but we are really tough to beat.”
Senior 125-pounder Matt Steintrager earned a narrow victory over Stanford freshman Ryan Mango early in the match. Steintrager earned a 2-1 decision despite not getting a takedown on his opponent.
“It shouldn’t have been that close,” Steintrager said. “And if I were to wrestle him again, it wouldn’t be.”
Senior 141-pounder Conor Beebe earned the teams first bonus points with a major decision over freshman Bret Baumbach. Senior 149-pounder Tony D’Alie and 197-pound senior Eric Simaz also scored bonus points with major decisions.
Stanford’s only points came on a forfeit of the 184-pound weight class as junior Mike Miller was not able to compete with and injury.
Central will open conference play Thursday with a match against in-state rival Eastern Michigan.
“We wrestled really well,” Steintrager said. “And as soon as we get back wrestlers like Steve Brown and Mike Miller, we are going to be back on top.”
