Sports Update: Volleyball wins in five sets Friday

The volleyball team rallied from down two sets to win its second conference game in the fifth set.

Ball State dominated the first set 25-9 and stole the second set 27-25 before the Chippewas won the next three to clinch the match 3-2.

“We fought and it is probably one of the best comebacks I have ever been a part of, as a player or a coach,” said coach Erik Olson. “After getting your butts kicked in the first set and then almost winning the second set, most teams would have just wilted away in game three. But we kept fighting and I am very proud of our team.”

The key to the game was sophomore setter Catherine Ludwig coming in to help out a struggling offense. Ludwig finished the night with 30 set assists.

“We were down in the locker room and we decided that we had to defend our court,” Ludwig said. “This is our game and we weren’t going to let them control it.”

Junior outside hitter Lauren Krupsky led CMU with 19 kills. She controlled the second set hitting for a floor high seven kills.

The win makes Central 3-0 in matches that go five sets. The team was unable to win a five-set match all last season.

The Chippewas take on Toledo at 7 p.m. Saturday in Rose Arena.

“We have to go out and compete,” Olson said. “We had a lot of doubt coming into this match, but I think we were able to overcome it.”
