Sports Update: Volleyball loses in straight sets to Bobcats
Central was swept in straight sets against the defending Mid-American Conference champions Ohio.
The volleyball team found itself down 18-13 in the first set and would win five of the next seven points to bring the game within one. Ohio would then regain control of the set by allowing only one more point and went on to take the last two sets handedly.
The Chippewas serving lacked its usual power as the team had averaged over two aces per set this season, but had only one ace in the three sets against Ohio.
“We were not able to put enough pressure on Ohio with our serves,” said head coach Erik Olson. “They were able to run their offense at will.”
Ohio outside hitter Ellen Herman was hard to contain in the first two sets as she racked up 17 kills. The defending MAC player of the year went on to total 20 kills.
“Herman played pretty well tonight,” Olson said. “She hit for 20 kills and around .500, and for an outside that is pretty outstanding.”
CMU also struggled on defense as they were out blocked by the Bobcats 9-3.
Sophomore outside hitter Lauren Krupsky led CMU with 10 kills.
The loss snapped a six-game win streak and brings the Chippewas to 8-3 overall and 1-1 in the MAC.
“We were to careful with our aggressiveness tonight,” Olson said. “We were thinking to much instead of just swinging hard. We have a week in the gym to get ready for next week.”
