Field hockey finishes weekend with loss to Northwestern

The field hockey team capped off a disappointing weekend with a 5-2 loss to No. 21 Northwestern.

NU senior Elizabeth Dobbs started the scoring after receiving a pass from sophomore Chelsea Armstrong to put the Wildcats up 1-0 in the 17th minute. Armstrong scored a goal on a penalty corner in the 24th minute. Northwestern led 2-0 at halftime.

Armstrong ended the game with four goals.

“I think that we could have done a better job covering her," coach Cristy Freese said. "What it comes down to is we just couldn’t contain their big scorer.”

In the second half, Northwestern carried over its offensive attack from the first half with Armstrong her second and third goals just 22 seconds apart.

“They came out and scored two quick goals in the second half,” Freese said. “Then we really controlled the game after that and we got two goals.”

In the 44th minute of the game, the Chippewas started their scoring. Senior Kelly Jordan scored on a rebound to get the team on the board. Jordan assisted on the Chippewas' second goal.

Armstrong finished the scoring with her fourth goal in the final minute to make the score 5-2.

“Obviously we are disappointed that we lost the game and that we lost both games this weekend,” Freese said. “I did see some good things from our team and I certainly saw some good things from our offense."

Senior Melinda Curran started for the Chippewas and made three saves between in goal.

With the loss, CMU dropped to 1-3 on the season. The Chippewas lost 3-1 to Miami University on Friday. It was the team's first Mid-American Conference game of the year.

“We will come back, like we always do,” Jordan said. “It is just one of those situations where anyone can have a bad game or a bad day, but we will come back strong.”

The team will travel to Ohio to participate in two more non-conference games against Vermont on Saturday and Ohio State on Sunday.
