Schroll lone winner at MAC Championships for women's track

Erika Schroll's first place in the high jump highlighted the Mid-American Conference Championships for the women's track team.

The junior won the event with a jump of five-feet and seven and three quarter inches, earning her first team All-MAC honors.

"I was very pleased to see how well Erika performed at the meet," said head coach Karen Lutzke. "The MAC has improved as a conference in many events and she did a great job against some tough competition."

The team finished seventh at the MAC Championships this weekend at Kent State.

The Chippewas ended the meet with a total of 44.5 team points. Winning the event was Akron with 110 points, and host Kent State took second place with 96.

Lutzke said although the team had some good individual performances, it was disappointing to see the team finish in seventh place.

Scoring points for the Chippewas in the finals were junior Cara Dukes, who tied for third in the 400-meter run with a time of 55.98 seconds, junior Sarah Squires finished eighth in the mile run, sophomore Shanaye Carr took fourth in the 60m hurdles, setting a new personal record with a time of 8.61s.

Freshman Ashley Esparza finished seventh in the pole vault and sophomore Norianna Brown took sixth place in the shot put. The four-by-four relay team of Dukes, juniors Erin Dillon and Stephanie Byrne, and freshman Stephanie Hurley finished sixth.

"Shanaye Carr scored some big points for us in the hurdles," Lutzke said. "It was a very competitive race and I thought she did a great job."

Sophomore Jordan Dunn took fifth place in the 60m dash with a time of 7.64 seconds. Third, fourth, and fifth places were separated by only .02 seconds in the event.

Junior Tanisha Johnson just missed scoring points for the Chippewas in the pentathlon, finishing ninth (3,480 points).

"I just wanted to go out and give it my all," Johnson said. "My personal goal was to have nothing left in me come the ride home on Saturday night."

The distance medley team of sophomores Raeanne Lohner, Danielle Dakroub, Hurley and Squires finished fourth with a time of 11:56.72, earning the Chippewas five team points.

Lutzke said she was very happy with the way the distance medley team performed.

The team has four weeks until the outdoor season begins.

"We are going to take a little break and then get back to it," Lutzke said. "We are going to go back to the drawing board and get the girls ready for the outdoor season."
