URec holding town hall meeting Tuesday

Shepherd resident Tori Cook wants to use the Student Activity Center more often, but her non-student status limits that ability.

"I will definitely be there to talk about the community members' hours. I really would like to come here more often," the 25-year-old SAC member said. "I can only come in before 1 p.m. on Monday through Thursdays and all day Friday through Sunday."

URec members will get a chance to air concerns at the URec Advisory Council Town Hall meeting Tuesday from 8 to 10 p.m. in the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) room of the Student Activity Center.

Director of URec Stan Shingles said this is the second of three meetings the department has had this year in hopes of improving its services.

"Our URec Advisory Council set its goals this year to try to get as much feedback as possible about our university operations" he said. "There are many issues, whether its overcrowding or expansion."

Shingles also said things were discussed during the last meeting that they were able to address, including putting the SAC's closing time back to its normal hours.

"At that time we were closing the facility at 10 o'clock, because of some funding issues," he said. "Students expressed their concerns that there was less time."

UREC had funding issues fixed after Vice President for Finance and Administrative Services David Burdette found more funding to keep the facility open until midnight Monday through Thursday and 11 p.m. Friday through Sunday, like it was before hours were cut last January.

President Michael Rao the designated $50,000 annually from the university's General Fund.

"It was base funding," Shingles said. "Every year we'll get that additional $50,000."

Shingles also said there still are issues that need to be addressed that were brought up during the last meeting.

"Another issue was our funding for sports clubs," he said. "We're lacking behind in funding for our sports club."

URec Associate Director of Marketing and Business Cheryll Nordin, said they also are going to gauge feelings about how things are being run.

"We're going to be conducting a general survey." she said. "It's an important time for the council to discuss university recreation and its growth and needs."
