Women's basketball coach Sue Guevara denied allegations that she terminated a former basketball player's scholarship because of differences in appearance and sexual orientation on Wednesday.

"The allegations against me are false," she said, "and that is the extent of it."

Guevara made the statement following the team's 78-57 win over Akron at Rose Arena, one day after news broke that former player Brooke Heike, 20, of Washington Township, is suing the coach and Central Michigan University for sex discrimination, among other allegations.

Several fans showed support for Guevara at the game, holding signs saying, "We support you, Coach G," among others.

One person holding a sign was Florida senior Courtney Ferrara, wife of assistant women's basketball coach Bill Ferrara.

"I was absolutely disgusted," Courtney Ferrara said of hearing the news. "I thought it was laughable. Every single allegation, i think, is a lie.

"I think highly of Sue - I've known her since 2006, when we were down in Auburn, Ala. She's the whole reason I moved to Michigan. I think she's a great coach and a more wonderful person."

The lawsuit was filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Bay City. Heike alleges that Guevara said multiple times that she was not her "type" of person because Heike was a heterosexual. Guevara revoked her scholarship in March 2008.

Heike totaled two points in six games last season as a sophomore. She has attended Delta College since leaving CMU.

Others named as defendants in the lawsuit are Athletics Director Dave Heeke, scholarship official Patricia Pickler and the Board of Trustees.
