Proposed gas tax may fund transportation industry
Michigan drivers will see an increase in registration fees, gas taxes and other fees if a plan proposed by The Michigan Infrastructure & Transportation Association passes the state legislature.
The plan, which the MITA calls a "landmark economic stimulus plan," is designed to generate up to $1.5 billion for the state's transportation industry.
"The MITA transportation investment proposal is a sound plan that will not only begin to fix our deteriorating transportation industry but also create jobs and economic growth for our state," Mike Nystrom, vice president of government and public relations for the MITA, said in a press release.
Nystrom also stated the MITA's desire for the state legislature to act on the bill during the current "lame duck" session. Gov. Jennifer Granholm; State Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop, R-Rochester; and State House Majority Leader Andy Dillon, D-Redford, have all expressed reservations about acting on the plan before the end of the current legislative sessions.
The MITA plan calls for an additional $12 in taxes on Michigan motorists, increasing the current rate from $30 to $42.
