Don't ruin the party

Kelly/Shorts Stadium is preparing to host the biggest game Central Michigan University has seen ever on Wednesday.

The game, against Ball State University at 7 p.m., will be nationally televised on ESPN2 and will determine the MAC West champion, which CMU has already won the past two years.

Beside the prestige that BSU is the highest rank team CMU has ever hosted, it is also the chance for some students to see their last home game as a Chippewa.

Students will have the last chance to represent the university not only on campus, but on national television. So when the camera pans the audience, don't be the one making CMU look bad.

University President Michael Rao encouraged students to maintain respect and safety in an interview with Central Michigan Life last week.

"It's important for everybody to remember that we have developed a great championship culture at CMU, that everyone of us, what we say and what we do, has some reflection on our university," he said.

In an effort to maintain tailgate, administrators are adding temporary signs along West Campus Drive to remind tailgaters it is illegal to drink along the road. Obviously, since the university issued a public statement that they are not permitting this, it will be enforced heavily. So don't be that person who wants to beat the odds and listen to what regulations are in place.

In addition, safety lights will be added to the overflow parking area south of West Campus Drive to help people who are parking their cars.

We should cheer on CMU, but it should be done safely. The final tailgate of 2008 ought to be remembered as a happy gathering, rather than a group of distraught, disoriented students.
