Camp defeats Concannon for 10th term

Incumbent Rep. Dave Camp, R-Midland, defeated challenger Andrew Concannon, D-Saginaw.

Camp leads Concannon 56.6 percent to 40.4 percent, with 62 percent of precincts reporting.

The victory will return Camp to Congress for his 10th term representing Michigan's fourth district.

Political science professor Tom Stewart said Camp's victory was expected.

"That's no surprise," Stewart said. "Mid-Michigan has a long legacy of supporting Republicans like Camp, and incumbents are just hard to beat."

Concannon, who was in his first race for public office, said he is proud of the race.

"I'm really proud of the race we ran," Concannon said. "It's no secret that I was outspent 20-to-1. I had never run for public office before, and am in district that's built for Republicans. I felt we ran an honorable race, and I don't know if that was mirrored by the other side."

Concannon said that his race was one of 25 or 30 races targeted by the Democratic Congressional Caucus in the spring, but the resources were eventually spent in races in Michigan's seventh and ninth congressional district.

Even with his loss, Concannon feels he still has a political future.

"Even though we came up short tonight, I'm proud of the fact that the (Detroit) Free Press said that I'm a Democrat with a political future," he said.

Camp's campaign could not be reached for comment at press time.
