Wake-up call sparks hunger in field hockey team

Senior midfielder Erin Dottery of the field hockey team said last weekend’s loss to Saint Louis was a wake-up call.

The team struggled with passing and playing together in its 3-0 loss, Dottery said.

CMU will try to improve on those facets when it plays Colgate at 1 p.m. Saturday in Kent, Ohio.

“It’s better to have a loss at the beginning, so we can focus on the things we did wrong,” Dottery said. “Right now, we’re just focusing on the little things.”

Coach Cristy Freese said the team also has been working on playing tighter defense and expanding its options on offense.

Both the Raiders and CMU are young teams. Colgate’s captain, goalie Jacque Demarco, is the lone senior on the team.

CMU has four seniors, but the rest of the team consists of mainly freshmen and sophomores.

“I think we will be similar kind of teams,” Freese said. “We’re both young and both have some good talent.”

Freese said young teams still are learning how to play together at this point of the season.

“I think it will be a good match up. I’m excited for it,” Freese said.

The Raiders won their first game of the season last weekend with a 3-2 overtime win against Rider. It was Colgate’s second overtime game this season. It suffered an 8-2 loss to Albany in its previous game.

This is the first ever meeting between the two schools. The game will be played at a neutral site at Kent State University.
