Field hockey team prevents a setback

The field hockey team could have let a win slip away after allowing Colgate’s Katelyn Nerbonne to score two consecutive goals to erase a two-goal lead Saturday.

However, the Chippewas regrouped and scored two late goals of their own to earn a 5-3 win in Kent, Ohio.

Sophomore midfielder Amanda Lucik scored the game-winner on an unassisted goal.

“I beat a girl to the inside and had an open net and was able to just put it in,” Lucik said. “This win shows just how mentally tough we are.”

Sophomore forward Moyra Betuzzi added Central’s final goal. She also had its opening goal in the 25th minute.

The win improved CMU to 3-1 overall, while Colgate fell to 1-3.

Weekend Recap

CMU 5, Colgate 3

Amanda Lucik (So.) game winning goal
Moyra Betuzzi (So.) two goals
Kelly Jordan (So.) one goal, two assists

“It felt really good,” Betuzzi said. “The team as a whole worked well together, and this game gave confidence not only to the forwards, but the midfielders as well.”

Central led 3-1 before Nerbonne scored twice for the Raiders to tie the game at three.

CMU sophomore forward Kelly Jordan had a goal and two assists, while senior forward Alicia Balanesi added the other goal.

Coach Cristy Freese said she was proud of the way her team responded after giving up their lead and still coming away with the win.

The Chippewas outshot Colgate 25-11.

“We worked a lot on shooting this week in practice,” Freese said. “Twenty-five shots, that’s a lot for a game.”

The five goals were the most this season for CMU.

The Raiders caused trouble for CMU’s defense, finding success in the middle of the field.

“They (Colgate) carried the ball down the middle on us,” Freese said.

The team plays back-to-back games next weekend against Indiana and Maine in Bloomington Ind.
