Freese disappointed with team’s effort

CMU field hockey coach Cristy Freese expected more out of her team Tuesday.

The Chippewas came out flat in their first home game of the season and were beat by No. 8 Michigan 2-0.

Freese wasn’t as upset with the loss as she was with the way her team performed.

“I don’t care if they are ranked and if it’s Michigan,” Freese said. “I’m just very disappointed in the effort today, and I’m not satisfied by losing just 2-0. I demand more than that.”

It was the 16th consecutive time CMU has lost to Michigan dating back to 1990, and the loss was its first of the season via shutout.

Despite 11 penalty corners, CMU struggled to generate opportunities.

The 2-0 loss is closer than last season’s 11-0 defeat, but senior midfielder Erica Takach was not satisfied with the moral victory.

“We were beating them to the ball, had a lot of shots on goal and at times dominated the field,” Takach said. “But there is no way can you beat the No. 8 ranked team by playing on and off.”

Another factor CMU had to deal with was high heat and humidity.

The weather conditions caused the ball to stick to the turf, a problem both teams had to factor into their gameplan.

“I think it had something to do with the brand new game balls, the heat and the humidity,” Freese said. “We switched the balls at the half and that seemed to help, but I’ve never seen the turf that sticky before.”
