Turf repair underway
The 11-year old surface of Kelly/Shorts Stadium will be no more when contractors begin removing the torn and tattered surface today.
The process should take three to five days, before contractors begin preparing the sub base. Workers must carefully remove the concrete and asphalt crown that was installed the last time the turf was replaced before the new FieldTurf is installed.
The surface must be completely flat in order for the FieldTurf to be effective in preventing injuries to players.
Summer camps will not be able to use the facility because it will not yet be completed, but Athletics Director Herb Deromedi said he expects the project too be completed prior to the start of football season.
The Board of Trustees approved $925,000 earlier this year for the resurfacing of the stadium through its deferred maintenance budget. Negotiations between both sides have estimated the cost to be around $638,000.
The FieldTurf will be a filled surface, and the field hockey team still does not have a place to play.
