Club hockey defeats Ferris

The club hockey team will play Saginaw Valley State Friday and have a rematch with No. 3 Ferris State Saturday.

CMU showed FSU and the rest of Division II why it is a force to be reckoned in a 7-6 win Nov. 25.

Down 5-2 with a period to play, CMU (8-7) stepped up the offense and converted five third-period goals. Chris LaPan, Rich Scheele, Brad Zielke, Pete Courtright, and Kevin Michalak scored those goals.

Top scorers LaPan and Scheele stepped up for CMU, both netting two goals.

LaPan notched the gamewinner with 39 seconds to play.

Coach Dave Goldenbogen said extra effort in the third was the key to victory.

“The guys just seemed to give it all in the third and we changed things around,” he said.

Another key to winning was the reemergence of Scheele as a goal scorer.

Scheele was one of the leading scorers in DII last season. He started late this season and has just now got back on track.

Goldenbogen was pleased with the play of his former captain.

“It was nice to see Scheele light the lamp a few times,” he said.

The comeback victory gives the team much needed confidence going into Saturday’s rematch with FSU. A few more victories against teams like Ferris and CMU could be back in the National Tournament hunt.

Goldenbogen stressed the importance of the next few weeks.

“Beating the third ranked team in your division is a great accomplishment,” he said. “We play Ferris this Saturday and the week after we have another match with Oakland. If we can win both of those games we are back in it.”

One thing CMU will have to do a better job of is holding down Derek Hool from FSU. The forward netted five goals in Tuesday’s game.

If CMU is able to hold his scoring down, it may not need a rally to succeed Saturday. Otherwise it may be in for a long day.

“We need to keep a better eye on him next time,” Goldenbogen said.

Friday night’s game against SVSU is at the Community Recreation Center, 5165 East Remus Road.

Jonker will be inducted to NFCA Hall of Fame

CMU softball coach Margo Jonker has won numerous championships and awards in her 24 seasons at CMU.

This weekend, she will receive one of the highest honors of her career.

Jonker’s peers have selected her for induction into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame. She will be formally presented with the honor at the organization’s natonal convention Dec. 5 in Montgomery, Texas.

The charter class of the NFCA Hall of Fame was inducted in 1991. Jonker is one of three honorees this season, bringing the Hall’s membership to 30.

“I think in a coaching career to be honored by your colleagues and players is one of the highest awards you can receive,” Jonker said in a press release. “The greatest honor, though, is to see your players be successful on and off the field and have them improve throughout their career.”
