Parking permit sales decrease 6 percent

With permit sales decreasing and spots increasing, parking on campus should be more bearable, officials say.

“We have 600 more spaces on campus this year than last year and we have fewer people vying for parking spaces,” CMU Police Chief Stan Dinius said.

Mike Silverthorn, Public Relations and Marketing executive director of news services, said CMU is making headway.

“We will continue working on the parking situation and are seeing a little bit of progress with the numbers we are seeing,” he said.

Parking permits vs. spaces
  • 6,189 commuter permits were issued this year. There are 4,202 commuter parking spaces on campus.
  • 2,019 faculty and staff permits were issued this year. There are 1,944 faculty and staff parking spaces on campus.
  • There were 795 fewer vehicles registered this year, a 6 percent decrease.

Dinius said parking pass sales have decreased with the rising cost.

The Board of Trustees raised the prices of parking permits in the spring for the 2003-04 academic year.

The costs now are $150 for residents, $175 for commuters, $185 for faculty and staff and $200 for senior officers. This is a jump from last year’s $50 for residents and $100 for everyone else.

According to comparison data, as of Sept. 30 there were 795 fewer vehicles registered on campus compared to a year ago, a 6 percent decrease.

This year, 6,189 parking permits were issued for commuter lots, a decrease of 693 from last year’s 5,496 permits sold.

The number of parking spots on campus — including the addition of 160 spots this year — totals 4,202 for commuters.

Dinius said students don’t park in the same commuter lot all day because they have different class hours, which justifies handing out more passes than spots.

For faculty and staff, 2,029 parking permits were sold with 1,402 spots available.

The ratio of faculty spots to the number of permits distributed is the same as commuters.
