Gray team defeats Maroon Thursday
The Gray team exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning en route to a 5-4 win against the Maroon team at Theunissen Stadium Thursday in the annual fall World Series.
The victory gave the Gray team an insurmountable 4-1-1 lead in the series that comes to an end on Friday at Theunissen Stadium with one game at 3 p.m.
Senior right-hander Jeff Opalewski went the distance for the Gray team, allowing four runs while striking out eight and walking two.
Senior right-hander David LeMieux had a shutout going into the fifth but was touched for five unearned runs and took the loss. Freshman Mark Schley tossed a scoreless sixth inning for the Maroon team.
In that fifth frame, freshman Eric Cannon (double), sophomore Brian Campbell (single), senior Tom Grzywacz (single), sophomore J.T. Jones (single) and sophomore Chase Welker (double) all drove in runs for the Gray team.
Jones and Welker each had two hits for the winners.
Freshman Brandon Shuck paced the Maroon team with a two-run triple in the third. Junior Kurtis Wells doubled and scored in the second on a bounce out by junior Ryan Peel and Jeff Tebeau doubled in the seventh and scored on a grounder by freshman Ken Hoffman.
