Reed’s offense leads to road victory

Forward Kristy Reed led the field hockey team to a split in the opening weekend of MAC play.
The junior had two goals and two assists in a 6-1 win at Miami University Sunday and had an assist in a 4-1 loss at No. 14 Louisville Friday.
The Chippewas are 2-5 overall and 1-1 in the MAC.
“It certainly feels good to win and score a lot of goals,” said coach Cristy Freese about the Miami game. “We feel we can do this all the time.”
Senior Allison Foland got CMU on the board early, with her first goal of the season on a pass from Reed. Miami quickly answered, when senior Angie Snedden beat CMU goalkeeper Laura Plese on a penalty stroke for her sixth goal of the season. Snedden was given the penalty corner after one of her shots hit a Chippewas defender.
Senior Tarah Trottier scored 30 seconds later on another pass from Reed to make the score 2-1 at the half.
Sophomore Erica Takach scored her first goal of the season, and Reed added another to make it 5-1. Freshman Alicia Balanesi scored her first collegiate goal to close out the scoring at 6-1.
“It feels fantastic to finally score a lot of goals and win,” Trottier said. “The key was that our passes were really quick, and we were cutting to the passing lanes a lot.”
The Chipppewas outshot the RedHawks 28-7 and had an 11-5 advantage in penalty corners.
“Our passing game and our overall team play was excellent,” Freese said.
Plese earned her first victory of the season, stopping six shots and allowing one goal.
“Even though we won, we still have to get better,” Trottier said. “We have to clean up minor mistakes to get better for the other teams in the league.”
When CMU lost its MAC opener at No. 14 Louisville Friday, it was the sixth straight loss against the Cardinals. The Chippewas were outshot 16-9.
“The score does not indicate how the game went,” Freese said. “When we made mistakes, Louisville scored, and we never capitalized on their mistakes.”
The team is off until Thursday when Kent State visits Kelly/Shorts Stadium for CMU’s home opener.
