Perry out, Vickers in against BGSU
With junior quarterback Jeff Perry likely out for an extended period, experienced senior Derrick Vickers will start at Bowling Green Saturday.
Perry, who injured his knee against Ball State, underwent an MRI last week, and could be out for the remainder of the season.
“It doesn’t look good,” said coach Mike DeBord. “We’re waiting for the results of a radiology test, but he is hurting.”
Vickers will bring three years of prior starting experience into the huddle. The senior has a 7-16 career record as the starter.
“I think I am very prepared because I kept a positive attitude throughout the season,” Vickers said. “My focus has been on being a leader.”
Vickers and Perry battled for the starting position throughout the spring, and while he did not get the starting nod, Vickers stayed focused.
“I want to make sure I’m always prepared for my teammates,” Vickers said. “You never know when you might be called on.”
Vickers has thrown for 4,095 yards, 23 touchdowns and 16 interceptions in his career. He also has completed 52 percent of his passes.
As a freshman, Vickers got his first career start against Western Michigan, and led the Chippewas to one of their biggest upsets in school history — a 21-17 victory.
