Chippewas get new modernized uniforms

Football Head Coach Mike DeBord felt like CMU’s uniforms needed upgrading.

Call it modernizing a tradition-rich product.

“It was something we had wanted to do and we felt needed to be upgraded in the program,” DeBord said. “It’s not like we changed the flying C or colors. All we’ve tried to do is update with the times.”

He said he gathered feedback from both his coaches and players on the new design, which features many new elements.

The blocky lettering is gone. So is the unnecessary material opposing teams could grab to make tackling an easier task, DeBord said.

The new jerseys feature elastic sleeving, smaller lettering across the front and the flying C on both sleeves.

The gold pants worn for home games also did away with several of its original features. The maroon and white stripe has been discarded and replaced with a flying C in the upper left pant leg. DeBord compared the gold coloration to Notre Dame’s.

“We had the players come in and ask what they liked and disliked about it,” DeBord said. “I wanted to make sure it represents our team in the right way.”

He said the biggest complaint with the old jerseys was they were too outdated. He said he is pleased with the new design, but added not everyone might like the change.

“There will be some people that won’t like the uniforms,” DeBord said.
