Softball at U of M Tuesday
The softball team will put its 10 game winning streak on the line on Tuesday at No. 15 Michigan.
The Chippewas are coming off of a 9-0 six inning victory at the University of Detroit, and are 19-8 overall and 8-1 in the MAC.
The contest against Michigan will be good competition, said Head Coach Margo Jonker. They are a very good team year in and year out.
The Wolverines are 21-8, and coming off two wins against Western Michigan.
I have a lot of respect for their program overall, Jonker said. We are very familiar with them, we played them in the fall and split.
Leading the way for Michigan will be senior pitcher Marissa Young, who has a record of 11-1. She has a 1.38 ERA and has struck out 106 this season.
Against Detroit the Chippewas had a season high 17 hits.
We feel that if we play the way we did in the second game against Detroit, we will be able to play with any team in the nation and win most of them, Jonker said.
Leading the way at the plate has been senior Michelle Brander. She leads the team with a batting average of .427 and is also the leader in RBI's with 19.
Most people hit well against Detroit and there are a couple that didn't, Jonker said. We would like to get their sticks back as well.
The CMU defense has been on as of late, with six shutouts in their last eight games.
Defensively we played well against Detroit, Jonker said. Our pitching also did will as a part of our defensive unit.
Next up for CMU will be a three game set at Western this weekend. The first game is set for Saturday at 1 p.m.
