Mester finishes first at national freestyles


Junior wresting standout Jason Mester won the University Freestyle National Championships at 66 kg over the weekend.

The athletes who competed for Central won the team title with 22 points, followed by Penn State’s 20. CMU won the competition for the first time in school history.

Mester automatically qualifies for the World Team Trials in Indianapolis, Ind. on June 20-22 and the Olympic Hopes Competition in Budapest, Hungry August 1-3.

Assistant Coach Tony Gansen placed third at 84 kg, and three other CMU wrestlers also placed in the event. Sophomore David Bolyard was fifth at 74 kg, sophomore Russ Vanderheyden placed sixth at 84 kg and sophomore Alex Lammers finished seventh at 96 kg.

Mester won the MAC Championship for the second time this season at 141 pounds. He then placed fifth at the NCAA Championships to earn All-Amercan honors.
