Field hockey knocks off KSU

The field hockey team won three games at Ohio State in the final week of the spring season..

The Chippewas finished in third place, which was up from a fifth place finish last season. CMU compiled a record of 3-2.

The Chippewas capped off the season with a 1-0 victory over MAC rival Kent State. Sophomore Kristy Reed scored the only goal of the game on a penalty corner, with assists coming from junior Ali Folland and sophomore Michelle Fogle. Junior goalkeeper Laura Plese got her second shutout of the day.

“I thought we played very well except for the Ohio State game,” said Head Coach Cristy Freese. “I thought against Ohio State we got pushed around, and we didn’t play very well.”

In the final regular scheduled game, CMU beat MAC foe Ohio University, 2-1.

Folland scored the first goal. Junior Tarah Trottier scored the game-winner, beating the Ohio goalie on a breakaway. Junior Kerri Krasnow started in goal, before Plese came in the game in relief.

The Chippewas also had a chance to play the Big Ten’s Ohio State, and lost 4-1. Krasnow started in goal, before Plese again saw relief action.

In the first game against Kent State, freshman Alisa Folk scored what would become the game winner, as CMU won 1-0. Plese got the shutout in the cage for CMU.

Freese said she was happy with the way her young team played.

“This team really established themselves this weekend,” Freese said. “I wanted to be able to go into the off season with an established defense. When you lose the number of starters that we did and still have the players step up the way they did is really exciting.”

Although the Chippewas first three games were only 35 minutes long, Freese said mental fatigue was a factor.

“Conditioning-wise we were fine, but the hardest part of playing this many games was getting it going in the beginning of the game,” Freese said. “Although we were a little slower in terms of execution, our conditioning was not a problem.”

The Chippewas and Kent State have had many close battles. The last five games have all been decided by one goal, and three of the games were in double overtime.

“It is beginning to become a rivalry,” Freese said. “They’ve been the team on the top and it’s nice for us to go out and be really consistent all year. We can go into next season knowing we can play with anybody, and if we can go in that way next year, we’ll have a lot better chance of winning.”
