CMU splits Falcons in baseball series

Sophomore Keith Laughlin struck out a career-high nine batters as Bowling Green won 6-3 Sunday to earn a split in the weekend series.

The left-hander worked 6 2/3 innings at Theunissen Stadium, shutting out CMU for the first six. Six of his strikeouts were on called third strikes.

“We thought we had good plate coverage, but once (home plate umpire Mike Duffy) widened the zone, it made it a little more difficult,” said Head Coach Steve Jaksa.

BGSU scored the first six runs of the game before Central got three in the seventh.

“When you’re coming from behind, (the third strikes) magnify themselves a bit,” Jaksa said.

Central won 10-7 Saturday in the opener of the series. The Chippewas are 10-15 and 2-4 in MAC play. BGSU moved its record to 9-13, 4-4.

First baseman Kelly Hunt led the way for BGSU with three hits and four RBI in Sunday’s game. He had a two-out RBI single in the first to open the scoring.

CMU rallied in the second, but after Tommy Grubb was forced out at third for the second out, the inning ended on a runner’s interference call. Umpires ruled that Grubb brought his elbow up to interfere with the throw of the fielder on a possible double-play on Brian Campbell’s grounder.

“Whether he would have thrown him out or not, we’ll never know, but that is the game,” Jaksa said.

BGSU added four more runs in the third off senior Joey Fahndrich. Again, it was Hunt who provided the spark, hitting a two-run double with one out.

Central was able to get its leadoff man on base in the third and fourth innings, but baserunning mistakes by David Latour Jr. and Brian Lautzenheiser ruined those opportunities.

“Those were two mistakes made by guys who have not done it before and we’re confident they won’t do it again,” Jaksa said.

Laughlin picked off Latour, Jr., and the Falcons caught Lautzenheiser stealing after getting a late jump.

Bowling Green added a run in the sixth before CMU was able to get three runs in the seventh. Chase Welker had a single that drove in a run and Jim Geldhof had a two-run double that knocked Laughlin out of the game. Tom Oestrike struck out Lautzenheiser to end the CMU two-out rally.

David LeMieux pitched 4 1/3 innings of relief for the Chippewas. The only run scored on him was unearned.

“I’d say right now (David) is our number one pitcher, but in terms of finding out who is a starter and who is a reliever, we’ll have to evaluate that as coaches for the next couple days,” Jaksa said.

LeMieux’s weekend pitching dropped his ERA to 2.38. He earned his team-leading fourth save in Saturday’s game by pitching a no-hit ninth.

The Falcons led 7-5 going into the bottom of the eighth Saturday, but clutch hits from Lautzenheiser and Mike Gates led the way for a five-run inning to get the win.

Lautzenheiser had an RBI double and Gates had a two-run single that proved to be the game-winner. Lautzenheiser finished with three hits on the afternoon, while Gates added four RBI. Grubb and Gates both homered early in the game for CMU.

David Barkholz had three hits for Bowling Green in the game, including his team-best fifth home run of the season.

Redshirt freshman Mark Lundquist earned his first career victory, working 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Ty Dunham started the game and gave up five earned runs on 5 1/3 innings.

CMU will play at Notre Dame today before hosting Oakland Tuesday.

The Fighting Irish are ranked No. 17 by Baseball America and are on a 16-game winning streak.

The game will start at 5 p.m.

Tuesday’s game against Oakland will begin at 3 p.m. at Theunissen Stadium.
