Baseball canceled again

The weather in Michigan is more unpredictable than the Detroit Tigers pitching staff.

Mount Pleasant was hit with January-like weather last weekend, and it hasn’t gotten any better during the week.

The baseball game against Chicago State has been canceled today.

The team had four games canceled against Kent State, and one with Detroit postponed.

“All we can do is hope for the best,” said Head Coach Steve Jaksa. “The guys realize that and it is becoming a little frustrating.”

Jaksa said it isn’t likely that there will be any baseball played at Theunissen Stadium today.

“It’s tough to get the field going. Our goal is to try and get it ready for Thursday ... maybe,” he said. “We’re working on the field every day, we just try not to think about it.”

On the other hand, Jaksa did have some optimism in his voice with a slight chuckle.

“Warmer weather is on the way, I hope,” he said.

The last time the Chippewas did participate in action was last week against Saginaw Valley State, in which the squad came out victorious, 8-4.

Junior left-hander Ryan Cremeans pitched seven and one-third innings of five-hit ball including 12 strikeouts. Cremeans improved his record to 1-3 on his 21st birthday.

Leading the way offensively for the team was senior Mike Gates and sophomore Jim Geldhof, each providing two hits and two RBI with Gates adding a run scored.

With the win, the team improved to 8-14 on the season, with SVSU falling to 14-8.
