Softball opens 3-1

In the first game against Ohio, CMU won 11-5 Saturday. The Chippewas had 11 hits, including a three run first inning. Senior Michelle Brander was 2-4 from the plate with three RBI, and sophomore Christin Sobeck was 3-4 with two RBI.
Junior Amber Puchalski pitched the entire game to pick up her sixth win. She had eight strikeouts.
Senior Jenni Rasmussen improved to 2-3 on the season after striking out four in the win for CMU. The Chippewas were trailing until Brander hit a two run home run in the top of the sixth inning to put CMU ahead for good. After a dsingle to center field, Sobeck hit a double to score Hamilton and give the Chippewas the 4-2 victory.
After struggling earlier this season with hitting, Hamilton is coming out of her slump, said Head Coach Margo Jonker. Hamilton got some key hits in game four of the weekend.
The Chippewas lost the first game against Miami 3-1 Sunday. Puchalski took the loss to put her record at 6-3 for the season. Freshman Jessica Garvin also pitched two innings for CMU. The Chippewas only run was a solo home run by Sobeck in the top of the fourth inning.
In the second game, Rasmussen evened her record at 3-3 on the season. The Chippewas had 10 hits in the 3-1 win. In the bottom of the third inning, Brander hit a a one-out double. Sobeck walked after another out, and Hamilton hit a two-out, two-run double to put CMU ahead 2-0.
Freshman Brittany Decker singled in the fifth inning to score freshman Karen Hohs from third to close out CMUs scoring.
The Chippewas continue the conference season Wednesday with a double header at Toledo.
CMU will host Bowling Green at 1 p.m. Saturday to open its home season.
