Field hockey opens spring season winless

In the first game against the Spartans, CMU dominated the stat column, but had problems getting past MSUs goal keeper in a 4-1 loss. The Chippewas outshot the Spartans 24 to 8.
Only 16 of CMUs shots were on goal and only seven of MSU's shots made it to the keeper.
The Chippewas were down 2-0 against Michigan, before coming back and finishing the game in a 2-2 tie. Sophomore Krisy Reed scored both goals for CMU.
In the first game, the Chippewas also had a lot of scoring chances through their penalty corner offense. The Chippewas had 17 penalty corner opportunities to MSUs two. Michigan State made the most of its chances, scoring on one of them, while CMU never scored.
The lone goal for CMU came from junior Tarah Trottier toward the end of the second half.
I thought we dominated the first half and really played well on offense, said Head Coach Cristy Freese. Except for Michigan State scoring, we really out played them.
The Chippewas had to change their defensive style of play because of MSUs offense.
Defensively, we had to change our philosophy because of how Michigan State was playing us, Freese said.
I thought we did a much better job defensively in the second half.Freese said that after the first weekend of games, her team must get better.
We need some improvements in terms of releasing the ball quicker, she said. We also need to clean up our corners, because we had opportunities there.
Against Michigan, CMU found themselves trailing by two goals at the half.
Its nice to see us be tough mentally, Freese said. Michigan beat MSU earlier 3-0, so they were definitely the tougher team.
Freese said she wants the team to get positive results from the games.
The biggest thing is using these two games to try and solidify this team, she said. Our defense and goalkeepers really need these games because thats where we lost the most people. No matter what the end results are from the spring league it will help us as a team.
