Baseball wins again on road
FRANKLIN, Ind. Junior David LeMieux went the distance in his first collegiate start as the Chippewas claimed a 2-1 non-league baseball win here Thursday over IPFW, 2-1.
The right-hander from Muskegon Reeths-Puffer scattered eight hits while striking out eight against one walk to raise his record to 2-0.
CMU has now won two in a row and stands 4-7 for the season. IPFW is 5-6-1.
The game was originally slated for Fort Wayne but the forecast of bad weather and poor grounds forced the game here about 12 miles southeast of Indianapolis. The game was still plagued by rain, wind, and hail but was never delayed.
The Chippewas jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a solo homer to straight away center by sophomore second baseman David Latour Jr. It was his first of the year.
CMU went up 2-0 in the seventh, pinch-runner J.T. Jones scoring an unearned run on an error.
IPFW came back in the bottom of the seventh with a solo homer to center by David Zachary, also his first of the season.
The Mastadons Jason Horvath allowed just one earned run through eight innings, giving up five hits. He walked four and struck out six as his record fell to 2-1.
Freshman shortstop Chase Welker had two singles to lead CMU.
The Chippewas return to action on Friday against Western Michigan in the Butler Classic in Indianapolis. Game time is set for 11:30 a.m.
