Baseball plays in Fort Wayne

Is the glass half empty of half full?

It all depends on how you look at the way the baseball team has played so far this season.

While showing signs just short of perfection with pitching performances by Jeff Garner and Ty Dunham, the squad is just 3-7 for the year. Up next for the team is a matchup with IUPU Fort Wayne. The teams are set to play one game, with the possibility of a double-header.

“We’re looking for an opportunity to play somebody before we play at the Butler Tournament this weekend,” said Head Coach Steve Jaksa. “We’re hoping for some good weather with this last week before conference play starts.”

IUPU Fort Wayne is coming off an 8-3 loss to Yale during the weekend. Tyler Fowler led the way for Yale with three hits and one run scored. Jacob Abramson added two hits and had a walk in four plate appearances. IUPU Fort Wayne is 5-4-1 on the season.

Jaksa said he still hasn’t seen a lineup that could be solidified as a starting nine.

“Some of these guys need to learn and that’s all part of gaining experience. Roles are starting to get established but we’re going to be changing roles this weekend as well,” he said.

The Chippewas are coming off a 9-2 win over Southern Illinois Sunday, after losing five consecutive games.

Redshirt freshman right-hander Ty Dunham had a stellar pitching performance, throwing seven innings, allowing six hits and one run while striking out five.

Dunham was named the Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Week for the West Division. He is the second CMU pitcher to receive the award this season. Senior Jeff Garner earned the recognition last week with his performance against Michigan State.

Senior center fielder Tommy Grubb had three consecutive singles in the game, scored two runs and had one RBI. As a team, CMU had 12 hits with sophomore Jim Geldhof and junior Dan Griesbaum each adding two.

The squad will go to Indianapolis after the IUPU Fort Wayne game to participate in the Butler Classic. Other teams competing in the tournament are Western Michigan, Michigan and host Butler.
