Field hockeys Lewis invited to all-star game

Senior Meg Lewis couldn’t have planned a better senior year.

A co-captain of the field hockey team, she helped the Chippewas to a Regular Season MAC Championship.

For her hard work Lewis was named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I South senior all-star team.

She will play midfield against the North squad at 7:30 p.m. today. The game will take place at Louisville, the site of the NCAA Final Four.

“I am really excited to be playing with people who are not my teammates,” Lewis said. “The game will be a lot of fun and it will be cool to play with new players.

“Even though I have been a forward all year, I should be able to adjust to the midfield spot,” Lewis said. “The only thing is that I have never played with any of my teammates before and we are just thrown into a game. Corners should be interesting.”

Lewis finished second in points this season, scoring seven goals and picking up two assists which was good for 16 points. She finished her career with 18 goals, six assists and 40 points.

“This was the dream year for me,” Lewis said. “Winning the MAC and playing for in the all-star game is an awesome way to end my career.”

When CMU recruited Lewis, it also recruited her to run cross county . The schedule conflicts would have made it impossible to do both at the same time. Lewis still has one year of eligibility left and she will spend it running for the cross country team next year.

“I will run cross country for one year and I will graduate in June of 2004,” Lewis said. “My roommates Kristen Podein and Cami Moll both run and I love to run, so I figured what the heck.”

Lewis, who is majoring in elementary education, also made Academic All-MAC with a 3.29 cumulative grade-point average.

The transition that Lewis will need to make is from a team game to the individual type mindset that cross country requires.

“The biggest difference with field hockey is that is a much more team-oriented sport,” Lewis said. “Cross country is a team sport, but when you run, you’re basically racing against yourself and the other runners’ times.”
