Terry Rawls becomes associate CEL dean Oct. 15

Were very happy she will be joining our team here and we are excited to get started, said Shellie Lynn Haut, CEL director of human resources and organizing services. Dr. Rawls is intimately familiar with our programs and processes and we cant wait to get started.
Rawls has worked at CMU since 1991 as a faculty member and administrator. He has served as chairwoman of the counseling and special education department and as interim associate dean at the College of Education and Human Services and the College of Graduate Studies. His most recent position was as director of the masters of science in administration program.
We really needed someone involved in the campus who understood the issues we faced, said Marcia Bankirer, CEL vice provost and dean.
Bankirer, Haut and six other CEL staff members conducted the internal search and interviewed two candidates for the position. Bankirer said Rawls was hired for him experience and background and the fact that he is a respected faculty member on campus.
Rawls replaces Larry Smiley, who returns as a senior faculty member in the CEL. Smiley will continue to work for the CEL developing two projects an academic leadership institute and education administration leadership programs for online delivery.
Larrys departure ... was a mutual decision and not a performance issue ... hes still with us and I have a lot of respect for him, Bankirer said.
The reorganization also includes the hire of the new director of planning and budgeting, Dan Stephens, who begins Monday.
We need someone who understands academic and strategic financial planning, Bankirer said. One of the goals of the reorganization is to change how the money is used in the CEL.
Stephens works as a financial and strategic planner at Mirant, an international corporation in Atlanta, Ga.
