Field hockey still looking for first crown

The field hockey team will have its first regular season championship if the Chippewas wins at Ohio and Kent State this weekend.

The No. 16 Chippewas thought they were out of contention after losing to Louisville 1-0 last Friday. It was the second time the Cardinals beat CMU, but Louisville then lost to Ball State 3-0 Saturday, and CMU was back in the driver’s seat.

“We control our own destiny,” said Head Coach Cristy Freese. “We can win the MAC by winning our last two games.”

CMU plays on the road Friday against defending MAC Champion Ohio University. The next day the Chippewas will be at Kent State, who was picked in a preseason coach’s poll to win the MAC regular season and tournament title.

“We have a lot of confidence going into the games this weekend because of the way we played them last time,” Freese said. “Ohio is the reigning MAC Champs and they do not want to give us an opportunity to take it from them.”

As happy as Freese is about the team being able to control its own outcome, she knows there is a flip side.

“The scary thing about this weekend is that we can finish anywhere from first place to fourth,” Freese said. “We have had an incredible year and we don't want to finish with nothing to show for it.”

The Chippewas play at 3 p.m. at Ohio and close out their season at Kent State Saturday.
