Reconstruction in Oct. to close Pickard Street
Get ready for more road rage on Pickard Street.
Beginning Oct. 7 and lasting about two weeks, the City of Mount Pleasant will reconstruct Pickard Street from Mission Street to Harris Street.
It is about a one mile stretch of Pickard (Street). From Oct. 7 to 21, we will be doing various phases of work, said Duane Ellis, city engineer.
A detour will be established for the two week period and local traffic will have limited access.
We need to cut down the traffic volume, Ellis said.
There will be three phases of work, including milling the surface, repairing the joints, and then paving it back, Ellis said.
Once the pavement has been milled, the concrete joints in the street will be repaired. This process will severely limit the access of through traffic, but the road will remain open for local traffic to access the businesses and residences along Pickard Street, Ellis said.
At times, local access will also be limited, so alternative routing may be required, Ellis said. The main detour will be detouring at Pickard and Mission (streets). We will have specifics on established detours when the project is under way.
Once the new asphalt is placed, access to the roadway will be restricted until the new asphalt has been compacted and cooled.
The whole thing should be done in a two-week span, Ellis said.
The entire project will cost $245,000. The majority of this $170,000 will be funded from a Michigan Transportation Department grant, and the city will fund the rest, Ellis said.
There are several restaurants right in there by the construction, but they should still be accessible with the local access, Ellis said.
Pinckney senior Ike Gingerich said that he doesnt expect the construction to get in his way.
As long as I can still get to Meijers, its all good, Gingerich said, referring to the store located on 1015 E. Pickard St.
