Eight of 12 Mid-American Conference teams won this week, including the No. 18 ranked Marshall Thundering Herd who defeated Appalachian State 50-17.

Thursday

Northern Illinois 42, Wake Forest 41

NIU senior tailback Thomas Hammock rushed for 172 yards and scored two touchdowns as the Huskies defeated the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in overtime, 42-41.

The Huskies (1-0) were down 14-0 with 3:37 left to go in the first quarter when NIU junior tailback Michael Turner returned a 93-yard kickoff for a touchdown.

Wake Forest (0-1) led throughout the game, but the Huskies outscored the Demons 11-0 in the fourth quarter.

NIU trailed 35-32 with four seconds left to play in the fourth quarter when junior kicker Steve Azar kicked a 45-yard field goal to take the game into overtime.

Hammock sealed the victory in overtime with a seven-yard touchdown run. Wake Forest then scored a touchdown but decided to go for the victory and failed on the two-point conversion.

Leading the way for Northern Illinois was Hammock and sophomore quarterback Josh Haldi, who completed 13 of 15 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns.

Kent State 34, New Hampshire 7

The Kent State Golden Flashes defeated the New Hampshire Wildcats 34-7.

Leading the way for the Golden Flashes was sophomore quarterback Joshua Cribbs, who rushed for a game-high 191 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns, while passing for 64 yards.

The Wildcats only score came in the second quarter, while Kent State’s defense shut them out in the second half.

KSU (1-0) junior wide receiver Maurio Medley caught four passes for 51 yards, while sophomore running back Antonio King added a touchdown.

Toledo 44, Cal Poly 16

Toledo senior quarterback Brian Jones threw for two touchdowns as the Rockets went on to defeat Cal Poly 44-16.

Jones went 12-for-16 for 197 yards.

Leading the way on the ground for the Rockets was senior tailback William Bratton, who rushed for 105 yards and one touchdown on 17 carries.

Toledo senior wide receiver Carl Ford and sophomore wide receiver Lance Moore also produced for the Rocket offense. Ford caught six passes for 107 yards and one touchdown, while Moore added four catches for 69 yards.

Bowling Green 41, Tennessee Tech 7

The Bowling Green Falcons defeated Tennessee Tech 41-7.

Falcon junior quarterback Josh Harris passed for 127 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 19 yards and two touchdowns.

Harris’s two main targets were senior wide receiver Robert Redd and sophomore wide receiver James Hawkins. Redd caught five passes for 65 yards and two touchdowns, while Hawkins caught four passes for 35 yards and a touchdown.

The Falcon defense allowed only 38 yards rushing on 25 attempts.

Lehigh 37, Buffalo 26

The Buffalo Bulls lost to Division IAA Lehigh 37-26.

Buffalo sophomore quarterback Randall Secky passed for 154 yards and a touchdown.

Also leading the way for the Bulls was wide receiver Andre Forde and sophomore wide receiver Matt Knueven. Forde caught three passes for 67 yards, while Knueven caught three passes for 45 yards and a touchdown.

Red-shirt freshman Aaron Leeper led the way for the Bulls on the ground. Leeper rushed for 73 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown.

Western Michigan 48, Indiana State 17

The Western Michigan Broncos accounted for a total of 403 yards as they went on to defeat Indiana State 48-17.

Junior quarterbacks Chad Munson and Jonathan Drach both produced significant numbers for the Broncos.

Munson completed 14 of 19 passes for 197 yards and four touchdowns, while Drach completed 9 of 17 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown.

Senior wide receiver Jermaine Lewis caught four passes for 120 yards and a touchdown, while junior wide receiver Antonio Thomas caught five passes for 62 yards and two touchdowns.

Saturday

Iowa 57, Akron 21

The Akron Zips lost to the Iowa Hawkeyes 57-21.

Leading the way for the Zips was sophomore quarterback Charlie Frye and junior wide receiver Matt Cherry.

Frye went completed 21 of 29 passes for 229 yards and two touchdowns, while Cherry caught eight passes for 69 yards and a touchdown.

Akron junior quarterback Nick Sparks also entered the game going 7-of-9 for 67 yards.

The Akron defense gave up 583 total yards and 366 rushing yards, while allowing the Hawkeyes to score 37 unanswered points in the first quarter.

Penn State 27, Central Florida 24

The No. 23 ranked Nittany Lions survived a scare against the Central Florida Golden Knights, winning 27-24.

Penn State led 27-9 at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but UCF put together a 63-yard drive that ended with a touchdown by sophomore tailback Alex Haynes and a two-point conversion.

The Golden Knights tried an onside kick, but the Nittany Lions recovered and ran the clock down to 1:28 before punting the ball back to UCF.

Central Florida put together another drive, which ended in a touchdown pass from junior quarterback Ryan Schneider to sophomore wide receiver Tavaris Capers with 24 seconds left to play.

The Golden Knights attempted another onside kick, but the Lions again recovered it and ran out the clock.

Schneider passed for 345 yards and a touchdown, while senior wide receiver Doug Gabriel caught 11 passes for 153 yards.

Marshall 50, Appalachian State 17

Heisman hopeful Byron Leftwich threw for 469 yards as the No. 18 ranked Marshall Thundering Herd defeated Appalachian State 50-17.

Leftwich went 27-of-41 for 469 yards and four touchdowns.

Sophomore wide receiver Josh Davis caught 11 passes for 264 yards and a touchdown.

On the ground, Marshall was led by junior running back Franklin Wallace. Wallace rushed for 71 yards on 11 attempts.

The Thundering Herd accounted for 643 total yards and 29 first downs to Appalachian State’s nine.

Pittsburgh 27, Ohio 14

The Ohio Bobcats lost to Pittsburgh 27-14.

Ohio was led by senior tailback Chad Brinker. Brinker rushed for 124 yards on 24 carries and a touchdown.

Junior quarterback Freddie Ray also produced yards on the ground rushing for 83 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown.

Ray also completed 7 of 10 passes for 61 yards.

The Bobcat defense came up with three interceptions, two from senior cornerback Bop White and one from sophomore linebacker Rob Stover.

Michigan State 56, Eastern Michigan 7

The No. 17th ranked Michigan State Spartans defeated the Eastern Michigan Eagles 56-7.

Leading the way for Eastern was senior quarterback Troy Edwards and senior wide receiver Kevin Walter.

Edwards completed 18 of 41 passes for 133 yards, while Walter caught 12 passes for 78 yards.

Scoring the Eagle’s only touchdown was senior tailback Ime Akpan. Akpan rushed for 37 yards on eight carries.

The Eastern offense was allowed only 241 yards of total offense compared to Michigan State’s 625.

Miami 27, North Carolina 21

The Miami RedHawks defeated North Carolina 27-21.

Miami sophomore quarterback Ben Roethlisberger led the way completing 16 of 32 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown.

On the ground, the RedHawks were led by junior runningbacks Luke Clemens and Cal Murray.

Clemens rushed for 136 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns, while Murray rushed for 96 yards on 21 carries and a touchdown.

Miami sophomore wide receiver Michael Larkin caught four passes for 30 yards and a touchdown.
