Marc Comstock will take over Jeff Smith’s position after Smith’s official resignation.

Smith is expected to be officially hired by the Golden Grizzlies this week.

“After five years, it was time for him to move forward and take new challenges,” said CMU Head Coach Jay Smith.

“It was all good and nothing negative. He just needed something to jump-start him.”

Jeff Smith joined the CMU program as a graduate assistant in May of 1997, where he served until the 1999 season, before being named an assistant coach.

Comstock, a 1976 graduate of Hillsdale College, wrote a book called “Defensive Notebook.”

The 62-page book explains Comstock’s eight keys to great defense.

Comstock’s last job was with the NCAA. Before taking that position, he was the head coach at Emporia State University. In three years, he had a combined record of 33-49. His contract was not renewed before the 2000-01 season.

He was assistant coach before taking over as head coach of Emporia State.
