Field Hockey wins two, improves to 5-2
The field hockey team got back to winning again with a 1-0 victory at Southwest Missouri State, and a 4-1 win at St. Louis University this weekend.
The only scoring against Southwest Missouri came from senior Meg Lewis, who scored her team-high fifth goal of the season, just 8:30 into the game.
Senior Jocelyn Gates scored twice and junior Katie Coccia and sophomore Michelle Fogle each had a goal against St. Louis.
Janel Spero was solid in the goal, turning away eight shots for her third shutout of the season against Southwest Missouri. Spero is now fourth on the Chippewas all-time shutout list with 10.
I felt that against Southwest Missouri we really controlled the game and had it in our offensive zone a lot in the first half, said Head Coach Cristy Freese. Our defense also played extremely well against them.
Freese said she was impressed with veteran keeper Janel Spero, who gave up one goal on 14 shots over the weekend.
Janel didnt see much action at all in the first half of the Southwest Missouri game, she said. In the second half she did, and it just goes to show how prepared she is mentally, especially with all the penalty corners they had.
In the second half of the Southwest Missouri game, the Bears came out strong and were awarded six penalty corners.
Kristy Reed played very well defensively, Freese said. In the second half she blocked a few shots off of their penalty corners and that helped us out a lot.
The Chippewas, who struggled to score against Southwest Missouri had no problem against St. Louis.
Offensively, we still need to do a lot better, Freese said. On paper, the Southwest Missouri team was supposed to be tougher than St. Louis, but we must continue to improve.
CMU (5-2) returns to action on Sept. 20-21 to play No. 11 Northeastern University and Temple in Ann Arbor.
