Two seniors named All-Americans
It was a great way for them to go out, said womens track and field Head Coach Kathleen Raske. They ended their collegiate careers on an awesome note by being named two of the four ever All-Americans to come from CMU (womens program).
Bozin garnered the honor with a fifth-place finish in the high jump with a mark of 5-feet-10-and-one-half-inches. UCLAs Darnesha Griffith jumped an even six feet to win the event.
It was the second time she earned the honor as she tied for sixth in the indoor championships earlier this season.
Suzy had her best jump ever at nationals, Raske said. I am really proud of her.
She tallied 5,259 points while tying for first in the high jump.
She was 10 points off from her career best, Raske said. She handled herself very well. Our goal for her was to win the high jump outright but she had a little bit of a timing problem. That is her best event; we would have liked her to jump one-and-a-quarter inches higher.
Kansas States Austra Skujyte won the event with an NCAA Championships record of 6,061 point.
This was the first time that CMU has had two All-Americans come out of the same championships. The womens program has now had four All-Americans.
It was a very nice way for our senior athletes to end their careers by competing at their best and performing well, Raske said.
NOTES: The two other female athletes from the MAC earned All-American honors were Briana Shook from Toledo with a fifth place finish in the 3000m Steeplechase, and Aje Farris from Kent State with a fifth-place finish in the 400 hurdles. Four male athletes earned All-American honors they are, Boaz Cheboiywo (EMU); Dale Cowper (WMU); Jordan Desilets (EMU); and Zach Riley (Ball State).
