Baseball signee Evey soon to steal show
Royal Oak Kimball centerfielder Dan Evey broke the Michigan High School State Athletic Associations career stolen-bases record, by stealing base number 146 in a District win over Oak Park.
I was thinking about it some during the Oak Park game, and it was a pretty big weight off of my shoulders, Evey said. After that I was able to not think about it and get back to just playing baseball.
Eveys 4.4 40-yard dash speed should help the Chippewas as they look for a MAC title in 2003.
Evey stole five bases in the Oak Park game, Kimballs 23rd win of the season. His leadership was instrumental in pacing the Knights to the OAA Division II Championship, a conference in which they finished 12-0.
Evey finished with 35 stolen bases in his senior season. During his sophomore season, Evey accumulated 55 steals, which was his career single-season high. During that 2000 season, Evey was not caught stealing once.
Kimballs season ended on Saturday with a 10-3 eight-inning loss in the district semifinal to U-D Jesuit.
Evey finished the season with seven home runs from the leadoff spot. In his high school career, he hit 16 homers.
He broke the record set in 1996 by Scott Pieratt of Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart High School. Pieratt went on to become a two-time CMU baseball MVP and served as a student assistant coach for the 2001 season. He was also a third-team Verizon Academic All-American during his senior year.
Its going to be a big challenge and a big step up, said Evey about playing for Central next spring. But Im going to work hard and do all the little things that the team needs to be successful.
