Women's track runs at EMU Twilight meet

Kia Johnson will return to the women’s track and field team today as the team competes at the unscored Eastern Michigan Twilight meet.

The junior sprinter did not compete in Indiana last weekend because of shin splints, but she is ready to compete in the 100 and 200m races. Johnson is the school-record holder for the indoor 60m and 200-meter races.

The team was originally scheduled to run at the Kansas Relays, but opted out for a couple reasons.

“We’re not going to go to Kansas because of academic concerns and because Eastern is the host of the outdoor MAC Championship,” said Head Coach Kathleen Raske. “It’ll be helpful to get used to the track down there.”

Junior hurdler Amber Bright, who also didn’t compete last weekend, will be held out again to heal minor injuries, as will sophomore thrower Natasha Reynolds and senior thrower Jane Ludtke.

Last weekend at Indiana, the team placed second in the four-way, losing 217.5-188.5 to Indiana, while beating Conference USA foes Marquette and Louisville.

Leading the way for CMU at Indiana were seniors Kari Karhoff and Suzy Bozin, who both took first-place honors. Karhoff won the 400m hurdle race, while Bozin won the high-jump competition.

Senior Melissa Brousseau’s second-place finishes in the discus and shot put were among seven runner-ups for the team.

“We’re looking for continued improvement at Eastern. We’ve been seeing good training weather these past couple weeks and we need to continue to take advantage of these opportunities to train and get better,” Raske said.

Eastern finished second to Central at the indoor MAC Championships and today is the first time the two teams will compete against each other in the outdoor season.
