Women's track & field competes in three-day event
Sophomore pole vaulter Amanda Storck and select members of the womens track and field team will compete today at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.
Storck provisionally qualified for nationals last Friday at Eastern Michigan with a CMU school record vault of 12-feet 9 1/2-inches.
As for this weekend, the team will face some of the best competition of the year.
We are competing against all the same people from nationals. Its a high caliber of competition and that really pushes you more, said senior high jumper Suzy Bozin. Bozin also has provisionally qualified for nationals.
Top notch programs including Michigan, Arizona, Arizona State, Nebraska, Purdue, Illinois, Kansas and Kansas State will compete in the event.
Bozin and fellow senior Melissa Brousseau took home first-place honors at EMU. Bozin finished first in the high jump and Brousseau took first in the shot put and second in the hammer throw.
Junior Kelli Kirchofer finished second in the high jump.
At Drake, Bozin said she anticipates great weather and the stands to be packed for a field full of national-caliber athletes and even some Olympians.
The meet begins with CMU senior Maria Derezinski competing in the heptathlon Wednesday and Thursday. Derezinski also has provisionally qualified for nationals.
Team members not competing at Drake will compete at Hillsdale starting Friday.
