Derezinski takes second at Drake Relays
Maria Derezinski proved Thursday at Drake Relays that she can perform in big meets, as she took second place in the heptathlon.
“It’s a great honor to be a runner-up at Drake Relays,” said Head Coach Kathleen Raske. “This is a great personal honor and great exposure for our program.”
The senior compiled 5,097 points, finishing behind Iowa State’s Barbara Szlendakova, who had 5,306. Along the way, Derezinski finished first in the high jump with a leap of 5-feet 8-inches and third in the long jump at 18-feet 2-inches.
The Des Moines, Iowa event hosts 8,700 athletes and 16 are representing Central. The rest of the events are today and Saturday.
Derezinski is already provisionally qualified for nationals in the heptathlon. The national meet will take place May 28 at LSU.
Athletes not competing at Drake will take part in an event at Hillsdale beginning today.
