Bozin, track and field team head to IU

The women’s track and field team is looking forward to some great conditions as it competes at Indiana University Saturday.

The team will compete in a team-scored USTCA-sanctioned quad against Indiana, Marquette and Louisville. The meet will be the last time the team will be in a scored meet until the MAC Championships at Eastern Michigan May 16.

“The conditions this weekend should be great,” said Head Coach Kathleen Raske. “The combination of great weather and a top-notch facility should be great for our athletes.”

Resting this weekend will be juniors Kia Johnson and Amber Bright, who both competed in the Texas Relays last weekend. Freshman sprinters Fallon Bailey and Jenni Roberts will need to post good finishes to pick up Johnson’s slack, Raske said.

At Texas, senior high jumper Suzy Bozin finished third with a 5-10 1/2 leap. Also for CMU, senior Maria Derezinski finished in fifth place in the heptathlon with 5,181 points. These marks provisionally qualified both athletes for nationals.

Most of the team competed at Notre Dame last weekend and brought home seven first-place finishes in the process. Leading the way was freshman Karen LeRoy, who won the steeplechase, setting a school record with a time of 11:14.39.

Indiana’s indoor team finished eighth in this year’s NCAA meet, and was the Big Ten runner-up. Marquette finished third in this year’s Conference USA indoor meet, while Louisville finished seventh. Despite the tough competition, Raske feels the team is ready.

“We have some solid training under our belt and now it’s time to get out there and compete. We are really looking forward to this meet.”
