Bozin, Karhoff finish first in events, team takes second

Despite resting two of its top athletes, the women’s track and field team earned a second-place finish at the Indiana Four Way on Saturday.

Juniors Kia Johnson and Amber Bright were given the weekend off to heal minor injuries, but the Chippewas still scored 190 points, falling only to the host Hoosiers, who had 240. Louisville and Marquette also competed in the USTCA-sponsored meet.

“I think the meet went well,” said senior high-jumper Suzy Bozin. “Some people weren’t thrilled with their performances. It was one of those weekends where either you were up or you were down, but we had lots of personal bests.”

The meet is the last time Central is scheduled to compete in a team-scored event until the MAC Championships on May 16 at Eastern Michigan.

Senior Kari Karhoff also managed to pick up a first-place finish at Indiana. Karhoff won the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:00.31.

Bozin won her first outdoor high jump competition of the season with a 5 foot-9 3/4-inch leap. Last weekend at Texas, she provisionally qualified for nationals in the event.

Central also finished second in seven events. Senior Melissa Brousseau has two of those second-place finishes in the discus and shot put.

Senior Maria Derezinski finished second behind Bozin in the high jump with a mark of 5 feet,4 1/4 inch. Derezinski provisionally qualified for nationals last weekend at Texas in the heptathlon.

Indiana finished eighth in the NCAA indoor competition in the winter and also was runner-up in the Big Ten meet.

Also finishing second for CMU were seniors Erin Miner and Abby Jaroscak. Miner ran the 800m in 2:14.33 and Jaroscak collected a time of 14.45 seconds in the 100m hurdles.

CMU took second in both the 400 m and 1600-meter relays.

Freshman Fallon Bailey picked up the slack for Johnson in the 100m with a third-place finish and a time of 12.17 seconds.

Overall, Bozin said she was pleased with how her outdoor season has been progressing.

“I have some mental things I need to work on, but just like everyone I’m hitting the weights hard and working up to a peak for the end of the season,” Bozin said.

The team will compete at Eastern Michigan on Friday for an event with the Eagles.
