“Everything went the way we planned and it came down to the last match of the night. We got out-experienced and out-wrestled,” said Head Coach Tom Borrelli.

“They came in and took our offense away. They were grabbing a lot and when a guys holds your wrists its tough to win when you wrestle one handed.”

CMU lost the dual vs. Michigan State 18-16 on the wings of Jason Borrelli’s loss in the 125-pound match to MSU’s Chris Williams 5-2.

Borrelli stayed with the No. 18 Williams till Williams pulled away in the third period.

Borrelli beat Williams 5-2 last week at the MSU Open.

“It’s real tough to beat the same guy twice. They looked at a lot of tape on Jason (Borrelli),” Borrelli said.

CMU led the dual heading into the final match after back to back victories from Brett Faustman at 197 and heavyweight Jack Leffler.

With the Chippewas down 15-10 Faustman beat State’s John Wechter who was bumped up to 197 pounds from his usual 184.

Nick Fekete, State’s usual 197 pounder, and No. 9 in the nation, was out due to injury.

“I wrestled with a little more pressure on me because I was supposed to beat him (Wechter). I had been watching tape on Fekete all week,” said Brett Faustman.

Faustman won the close match 7-6 to bring Central back into the dual cutting MSU’s lead to two, 15-13.

Leffler continued the high drama meet taking his opponent Mike Keenan to double overtime before sealing the victory, 2-1.

Leffler and Keenan wrestled back and forth for three regular and one overtime period before Leffler won the toss for sudden victory overtime and escaped in three seconds of the second etra period.

Leffler’s win gave CMU a one point lead heading into the final match of the night.

The dual stated with junior Jordan Webster dominating his opponent Ryan L’Amoreaux 11-7 and sophomore No. 10 in the nation Jason Mester handily beating Eric Keith 15-7 for a four point major decision.

The back to back wins gave CMU a quick 7-0 lead.

In the nights first showdown of ranked wrestlers MSU’s No. 15 Karl Nadolsky beat CMU’s No. 19 Ty Morgan 8-5 putting State’s first three point of the night in the board.

Following Nardolsky’s win No.11 Gray Maynard pinned No. 15 freshman David Bolyard at 3:59. The pin gave MSU their first lead of the night 9-7.

“If Maynard’s not the best wrestler in their line-up then Fekete is, but for a kid like David (Bolyard) to hang with a guy as good ad Maynard says a lot about our program and the level of athlete that we’re able to bring in here,” Borrelli said.

Kevin Carr beat his opponent Anton Hall at 165 pounds 7-4 to put Central back on top 10-9.

CMU would lose the next two matches as Nathan Mesyan blanked Jeff Pangborn 5-0 and Rashad Evans beat freshman Alex Lammers 5-3. The two wins put MSU up 15-10.

Pangborn’s loss represented the second loss of CMU’s returning sophomore class.

“It happens (a sophomore slump) in every sport. It’s hard to keep a guy focused for three to four years,” Borrelli said.

CMU’s next action comes at the Citadel Tournament 9 a.m. Sunday.
